When recommending movies to mom she will always ask—"is it a series?” She tends to stick to movies because with series she is tempted to binge. I didn’t realize how prominent it was until talking to my mom. I read on Wistia that Dr. Renee Carr, Psy. D, a clinical psychologist explained that: "binge-viewing a show produces a continuous stream of dopamine in our brains: [Dopamine] gives the body a natural, internal reward of pleasure that reinforces continued engagement in that activity. It’s the brain’s signal that communicates to the body —This feels good. You should keep doing this!”
Well—I called mom Saturday morning around 10am, and she was preparing to lay down. She stumbled onto Kings Affection and stayed up all night binging the Netflix series.
Inspired by her excitement, we put this list together of a few binge worthy series.
Kings Affection: (Netflix)
Based in South Korea, it is a wonderfully created period piece. It feels like you have a sneak peek into the inner workings of the palace. It reminded me a bit of Disney’s Mulan—with the love, drama and sacrifices made within a family.
Gilded Age: (HBO Max)
Another period piece—based in the 18th century is interesting as it was truly the turn of the century. When economic changes and growth shifted the way, many lived and worked. The women seem to battle this new and old way of doing things—from outfits to ballroom parties. Romance is present when we see how the love of a husband drives him to make decisions that provide his wife a sense of freedom unfitting for woman in 1882.
Only Murders in the Building: (Hulu)
This comedy is everything! I haven’t finished it—but mom did. I think of Steve Martin and Martin Short like honorary uncles, since I grew up to their movies. Throw in Selena Gomez and it is a great generational mix. Together they try to solve a murder and form a special bond in the process.
So, binge away—grab popcorn and enjoy the dopamine. You are in good company.
P.S. Mom is in the lowest binge category with 41%.
